Could My Child Have Dyscalculia?

You may be considering a dyscalculia or Math learning disorder test due to concerns about your child’s ability to understand math concepts, grasp numbers or quantities, or calculate accurately fluently. Some parents notice that their child relies on their fingers to count, though this is developmentally normal especially in preschoolers. However, persistent reliance on finger counting in primary school, even for basic math facts, could indicate a problem. An estimated 5% to 7% of children may have dyscalculia or a Math learning disorder. Some red flags of dyscalculia include:

  • Difficulties recognising numbers and connecting them to quantities
  • Difficulties with number order or magnitude comparison
  • Difficulties subitizing (recognising the number of objects without counting, e.g. number shown on dice)
  • Delays in learning how to count (e.g. skipping numbers or losing track)
  • Confusing mathematical symbols, e.g. + and –
  • Difficulties telling the time or counting money
  • Difficulties recognising number patterns, e.g. 2, 4, 6, 8
  • Over-reliance on finger counting beyond kindergarten
  • Trouble learning or retrieving basic math facts like 2+2=4 or the times tables

Children with dyscalculia are of normal intelligence, but have a specific difficulty with processing numerical information, learning arithmetic facts, and performing accurate or fluent calculations. Math learning disorder can also involve problems with mathematical reasoning and conceptual understanding.

Dyscalculia Testing & Diagnosis

Dyscalculia testing is not about “labelling” the child, but understanding why the challenges are occurring and what can be done to help. Many students who have started to think that they are just “not smart enough” are relieved to learn that their difficulties in Math is not due to low intelligence. Rather, there is a name for what they are experiencing, and most importantly, strategies that can help them succeed. A formal diagnosis also allows the child to gain access to exam accommodations (e.g. extra time).

At our intake consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss your questions, concerns and observations with the psychologist to determine if dyscalculia testing is indeed necessary. Dyscalculia testing at Bloom usually involves the following completed over 2 sessions with the child and 1 session with parents:

  • Qualitative feedback from teachers
  • Analysis of work samples and school records
  • Cognitive assessment
  • Math assessment (problem solving, computation and fluency)
  • Working through grade-level math questions with the child
  • Testing/screening for co-morbid conditions (e.g. anxiety)
  • Child interview
  • Parent feedback

As many learning and developmental conditions tend to co-occur, we often screen for other related difficulties. Some kids with dysgraphia may also be affected by broader motor difficulties. They may have poor motor coordination, appear clumsy, have awkward gait or postural control. These children tend to be poor at sports, ball games, drawing, and have trouble managing daily tasks that require motor control such as cutting, tying shoelaces or using cutlery. These are symptoms of dyspraxia or developmental coordination disorder (DCD), which requires assessment and support by occupational therapists. As DCD frequently co-occurs with other conditions, especially autism, dyslexia and dysgraphia, assessment of co-morbidities should be explored.
